Just finished watching Dr Who

And I liked it.

OK, some of the plot devices were crap (the whole "reality TV gone mad" thing in the last couple of episodes.

OK, some of the effects were crap (the slitheen or whatever they're called unzipping themselves out of their human disguises).

But the characterisations of The Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and his relationship with Rose (the increasingly beautiful Billie Piper) was superb. The moral/ethical dilemmas imposed on them were well scripted and well thought out (eg, in the last episode, the daleks are about to take over earth and turn all humans into daleks - the Doctor has one chance to wipe them out completely, but it'll take out all human life on earth as well - and as he says, is it better to die human or live as a dalek?)

I liked it. Hats off to the scripwriting team. Can't wait for the next series, as I like David Tennant that is the new Doctor - he was great in BBC's recent Casanova mini-series.

Nil By Mouth

Well, Nil except for the highest volume of "f**k" and "c**t" in a film that I've EVER seen!

No, really - it's held the record for the highest number of "f**k"s per film since it was released in 1997 to this year when Devil's Rejects (which I've not seen) beat it. Check out the details here.

Great gritty British film. Ray Winston and Kathy Burke (God bless 'er) star in this grim, grim film about dysfunctional families, addiction, familial violence, and other chirpy topics in lower class London. Grim, grim, grim. No happy ending. No real humour. But great acting.

I'm lining up to see "Sexy Beast" with Ray "Bastard" Winston as well... the reviews are pretty good for that.

How many different ways can you say....

rss feed for this post's comments

OK, Dear Reader, I'm back to making some regular posts, and here is today's:

I've just started watching "The Below"... new film on Sky Movies.

Scene: US submarine rescues 3 British survivors from some maritime mishap, and you see the gossip being passed backwards through the entire crew in a kind of "chinese whispers" or "bucket-brigade" fashion.

But... each time one person tells the next one that there are three British survivors, one of whom is a woman, they find a different way to say it. Such as:

Describing "3 brits", we have:
- "3 brits"
- "3 limeys"
- "3 redcoats"
- "3 bliteys"
and a couple that I've missed

Describing "1 woman", we have:
- "1 woman"
- "1 female"
- "1 bleeder"
- "1 bazoombas" (with hands held cupped in front of the chest for obvious reasons"
and a couple more that I've missed.

All in the space of 1-2 minutes panning along the length of the submarine as the word is passed.

Hmmm. Hands up anyone who thinks this is going to be a good film....

[Update: 20 minutes later]

They've just added "brillo pad" as another euphamism for "woman".

And this is by the directory of "Pitch Black". Oh dear.

[Update: at end of film]

Well, I'll give it.... 3 out of 10. It picked up a little bit as it went on, but still nowhere near Pitch Black quality. Don't bother unless you're really bored.
